DatingDirect.com is Britains largest dating website and has grown at an outstanding rate. It was created by the very clever Darren Richards in 1999.
It actually took him a while to find a developer who could set up the site for him and eventually found a guy who created the site for a 20% stake in the company. (You’ll see how much of a good idea that was further down this article when we reveal how much it is worth today!).
It took Darren a while to find a credit card processor to accept his payments. Barclaycard turned him down several times because they thought it was high risk. Eventually he met with them to show them the site and they instantly agreed to let him use their services on the dating website.
DatingDirect.com now has well over 1 million members and has created many successful relationships and even marriages. A couple of years ago it was valued at almost £35 million with a turnover of over £10 million. That amount is sure to have risen today.
Darren owns 80% of the company and it grows from strength to strength. The website developer who owns the other 20% did very well for themselves. I bet they are glad they didn’t turn that deal down!
